When learning a new language, be it Chinese or some other language, it really requires a great deal of effort.
It is especially so if the language completely different from your mother tongue. If you are already a grown-up, then that makes it harder too.
But don´t fret. Our brain is extremely well made. It is capable of doing a lot more than most people expect.
